On August 16, Unification Minister Kim Yung Ho paid a courtesy visit
to Director Choi Jong-soo of Sungkyunkwan (President of the Korean
Conference on Religion and Peace) and they exchanged views on the
direction of unification policy.
Minister Kim said, “Working side by side with the Confucianism
community will help in bringing changes to North Korean society since
Confucianism is the foundation of South Korea’s philosophy, education,
and political system.”
As resolving inter-Korean relations and unification issues require
embracing new values based on tradition, the minister asked the
community for their wisdom.
Director Choi conveyed his intention to participate in an
educational program on character and traditional etiquette when
supporting the resettlement of North Korean defectors in South Korea.
He also said that when the conditions for inter-Korean relations are
created, he will carry out various projects in coordination with the
government, including the restoration of Goryeo Sungkyunkwan.
Accordingly, Minister Kim promised that the government will work
closely with the religious community when implementing unification
policies and give support to good policies proposed by the
Confucianism community.
