The Ministry of Unification and the Governors Association of Korea
sign the Agreement for Peace and Prosperity on the Korean Peninsula
The Ministry of Unification signed the Agreement for Peace and
Prosperity on the Korean Peninsula with the Governors Association of
Korea (GAK) representing 17 governors and mayors including the mayor
of Seoul at the 42nd general meeting of the GAK held at the Westin
Chosun Busan on July 24.
The agreement calls for building strategic cooperative relations
between the Ministry of Unification and local governments, supporting
local governments’ exchange and cooperation with the North, creating
an institutional framework for communication and cooperation, and
conducting unification education to build consensus.
Unification Minister Kim Yeon Chul said, “This agreement will help
realize a new Korean Peninsula through decentralized policy on North
Korea for peace and unification, and the Ministry will provide funds
for local governments, the main agents of exchange and cooperation,
and facilitate contact with the North and expand cooperation projects
through the inter-Korean joint liaison office.”
