(November 20, Washington D.C.)
On November 20, the Ministry of Unification held the 2024 Global
Korea Forum (GKF) U.S. Seminar under the theme of the “Trilateral
Cooperation and the Korean Peninsula: The U.S., South Korea, and Japan Partnership.”
The GKF U.S. Seminar is the first GFK seminar held abroad following
the inaugural seminar in Seoul and marks the first international
conference organized by the Ministry of Unification after the U.S.
presidential election.
The seminar featured in-depth discussions on the impact of the U.S.
election on unification and North Korea policies of the South Korean
government, sanctions against North Korea, access to information in
North Korea, and North Korean human rights.
In particular, experts broadly discussed ways to strengthen and
develop the ROK-U.S. alliance by exploring the direction of North
Korea policy under the new Trump administration and South Korea’s
corresponding strategies. They reaffirmed the importance of improving
the human rights situation in North Korea, including expanding access
to information for its residents.
In his welcoming remarks, delivered by Whang Tae Hee, the head of
the Unification Cooperation Bureau, Unification Minister Kim Kim Yung
Ho emphasized that the “international community must respond firmly to
the reckless threats and provocations from the North Korean regime and
its barbaric acts against its people.” He highlighted that above all,
solidarity among South Korea, the U.S., and Japan, our strongest
allies, is crucial for this effort.
He further stated, “I am confident that true solidarity and close
partnership among our nations will enhance security and prosperity not
only on the Korean Peninsula but also in the Indo-Pacific region, and
in the world.”
