On August 12, Minister Kwon Youngse met with US Senator Edward Markey
and exchanged views on the recent situation on the Korean Peninsula
and North Korea policy.
Minister Kwon explained the Government's initiative to advance
inter-Korean relations and take on the issue of North Korea's denuclearization.
He also emphasized the Government’s consistent stance that
humanitarian cooperation with North Korea should be conducted
irrespective of political and military circumstances.
Senator Markey, as chair of the Senate Foreign Relations
Subcommittee on East Asia, the Pacific, and International
Cybersecurity Policy, expressed great interest in various topics such
as the North Korean situation and the Korean Peninsula issue and
suggested that both South Korea and the United States embrace joint
efforts in laying out policies towards North Korea.
The two sides highlighted the importance of the ROK-U.S. alliance
and agreed to continue to work together in the times ahead.
