On October 14, Minister
Kwon Youngse met with Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Melanie
Joly, and exchanged views on the recent situation on the Korean
Peninsula and unification as well as the North Korea
policy.
Minister Kwon Youngse shared an evaluation of the
situation on the Korean Peninsula, where tensions are rising,
including a series of military provocations by North Korea, and
asked for continued interest and support for the ROK Government's
“Audacious Initiative.”
Minister Kwon mentioned that North
Korea's provocation violates UN Security Council resolutions and
inter-Korean military agreements, and requires close cooperation
with Canada and the international community in terms of threatening
stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the rest of
region.
Minister Melanie Joly emphasized the importance of
peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula as part of Canada's
Indo-Pacific strategy.
She expressed support for the ROK
Government's policy toward North Korea, and noted that Canada would
also expand its diplomatic efforts so that the issue of the Korean
Peninsula could be treated more seriously in the international
community.
Both sides agreed to continue cooperation in various
fields, including the issues surrounding the Korean Peninsula.
