On January 27, Unification Minister Kwon Youngse met with Mark Green,
the president of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars
in the United States.
Minister Kwon and Green exchanged their views on the current
situation in North Korea and Minister Kwon explained the South Korean
government’s policies on unification and North Korea based on the
ROK-U.S. alliance.
The minister particularly highlighted the importance of cooperation
between the two countries centered on the “Audacious Initiative” and
asked for continued interest and support regarding the issues of the
Korean Peninsula.
The meeting was attended by former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State
Stephen Beigun, former U.S. Representative at the United Nations
Commission on the Status of Women Kelley Eckels Currie, former members
of the Congress, and academics.
Mark Green emphasized the need for unification readiness in various
aspects, expressing interest and sharing his opinions regarding the
Unification Ministry’s related policies.
The two sides agreed on the gravity of the Korean Peninsula issues
with the fluctuations in the current international circumstances and
decided to bolster cooperation in diverse fields, including analysis
of the North Korean situation and global dialogues on unification.
