The Korean National Red Cross announced on Saturday (Oct. 18) that it plans to provide 100,000 tons of fertilizer to North Korea.
Suh Young-hoon, president of the Korean Red Cross, made the proposal on Oct. 17 in a letter addressed to his North Korean counterpart Chang Jae-on.
Suh said in the letter that the decision to provide fertilizer additionally was made based on humanitarian reasons and compatriotism. The South Korean Red Cross said that the fertilizer delivery will begin late this month.
Last month, the North requested an additional 100,000 tons of fertilizer from South Korea this fall through bilateral Red Cross channels. North Korea said that the 200,000 tons of fertilizer that South Korea provided last spring contributed to inter-Korean reconciliation and unity, as well as the promotion of inter-Korean relations.
