Notice regarding Ministry’s issuance of
‘Certificate of Visit to North Korea’

o With the U.S. Government’s new measures to restrict use of the
Visa Waiver Program for individuals who have been present in North
Korea on or after March 1, 2011 taking effect as of August 6, related
persons should be issued a visa corresponding to his or her purpose
through the U.S. Embassy in Korea.
o The U.S. Embassy in Korea explains that this certificate is not
necessary when applying for a visa. However, the Unification Ministry
seeks to offer help to individuals who wish to receive the certificate.
- The certificate will include details including the recipient’s
name, gender, passport number, date of birth, purpose and duration of
visit, and will be confirmed by the Unification Minister.
o For questions and applications regarding the ‘Certificate of
Visit to North Korea,’ please contact the Service Desk of the
Inter-Korean Exchange and Cooperation System at 02-2100-5817.
(Operation hours : Monday to Friday, 9 A.M. to 6 P.M.)
- Individuals can apply for the certificate by phone after
providing his or her identification in accordance with the Personal
Information Protection Act.
o The Unification Ministry, upon request, will issue the
certificate as early as possible, and will make its utmost efforts to
reduce any inconveniences of our nationals.
