The Ministry of Unification’s budget
support for North Korean defector organizations is rising
July 9, 2019
o The Ministry of Unification’s total budget scale for supporting
North Korean defector organizations has consistently increased each year.
- The Korea Hana Foundation, an affiliated organization of the
Ministry, has pursued projects for the settlement of North Korean
defectors in which public participation is invited. This includes
general support projects and projects supporting specific purposes
such as learning, assistance for the disadvantaged, and volunteer
service. The total budget for the projects have consistently increased
with KRW 383 million in 2015, KRW 420 million in 2016, KRW 433 million
in 2017, KRW 500 million in 2018, and KRW 522 million in 2019.
- Therefore, the Chosun Ilbo report which states that
“The Ministry of Unification’s payments to North Korean defector
organizations to support the settlement of North Korean defectors have
halved” is not true.
