Vice Minister to visit Daeseongdong in
the DMZ
- Plan to conduct research on the DMZ in cooperation
with appropriate departments -
May 25, 2020
Vice Minister Suh Ho will visit Daeseongdong, a village in the DMZ,
along with a research team of the Cultural Heritage Administration on
May 26 as part of preparations to inscribe the DMZ on the UNESCO World
Heritage list.
The DMZ holds enormous historical, ecological, and cultural value.
It is a horizontal ecological axis of the Korean Peninsula and was the
scene of fierce battle during the Korean War. The government plans to
inscribe it on the UNESCO World Heritage list through overall research
on the DMZ beginning with Daeseongdong.
Daeseongdong was built after the South and the North agreed to each
maintain a village within the DMZ for civilians at the time of the
signing of the Armistice Agreement in 1953.
During the visit, the Vice Minister will be briefed on the overall
research plan of the Cultural Heritage Administration and will give
words of encouragement.
