Vice Minister visits Arrowhead Hill in Cheorwon
June 8, 2020
On June 8, Vice Minister Suh Ho visits a war remains excavation site
on Arrowhead (Hwasalmeori) Hill in Cheorwon along with the DMZ
research team of the Korea Forest Service to witness first-hand how
much progress has been made in forestry restoration there.
The research aims to restore forests and improve biodiversity in
areas around war remains excavation sites and the withdrawn guard
posts in the DMZ, as agreed in the September 19 Inter-Korean
Comprehensive Military Agreement.
The Korea Forest Service (KFS) plans to conduct the research in the
war remains excavation sites and around the withdrawn guard posts from
June 8 to 12.
The Cultural Heritage Administration first conducted research on
Daeseongdong from May 26 to 29 to inscribe the DMZ on the UNESCO World
Heritage list, part of the overall effort to transform the DMZ into an
international peace zone.
The KFS’s research on the DMZ is the second of its kind.
The Vice Minister plans to look around the war remains excavation
sites on Arrowhead Hill, hear the KFS’s overall research plan, and
give words of encouragement.
The KFS’s research on the DMZ is expected to do much to build a DMZ
peace zone including forestry cooperation between the two Koreas based
on the knowhow and experience in forest restoration it has accumulated
through numerous such projects.
The Ministry of Unification is rendering support for research on the
DMZ by the Cultural Heritage Administration, the Korea Forest Service,
and the Ministry of Environment with regard to turning the DMZ into an
international peace zone.
It will conduct research in close cooperation with appropriate
government departments, the Ministry of National Defense, and the
United Nations Command.
