North Korea Economic Research: Finding a
Platform for New Development and Cooperation
February 8, 2022
The Ministry of Unification and the National Research Council for
Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences will host the “North Korea
Economic Research: Finding a Platform for New Development and
Cooperation” forum to revitalize research on North Korean economy and
establish a research cooperation system between the public, private
and academic sectors.
The forum, which will be held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel on February 9
will begin with the opening ceremony, followed by a keynote
presentation by Lee Suk, North Korean Economic Studies Director of the
Korea Development Institute. Government-funded research institutes
will hold a roundtable discussion on the status of North Korean
economic research and prospects of creating a platform for new
cooperation, while the academia will examine the future of North
Korean economy and research into this field. The forum will be
broadcasted live on the Unification Ministry’s YouTube channel.
Participating parties will also discuss the necessity and
development direction of establishing a North Korea economic research
platform. The platform will be a communication and cooperation system
between the public, private and academia, in which the government and
domestic researchers periodically share the results of economic
research on North Korea and form a general opinion.
Through such discussions, we aim to promote sustainable research
cooperation in response to the changing North Korean economy, and
actively support discussions among researchers, thereby establishing a
research cooperation system that can prepare for the improvement of
inter-Korean relations in the future.
The Government expects this forum to serve as an opportunity for
sustainable communication and cooperation between the public, private
and academic sectors in the field of North Korea economic research. It
seeks to promote the development of the North Korea economic research
platform by solidifying inter-organizational discussions on the
research cooperation platform and regularizing the forum in the future.
