Unification Ministry's Stance on the
Dismantlement of Haegeumgang Hotel
April 8, 2022
The ROK Government expresses deep regret over North Korea
unilaterally dismantling the Hageumgang Hotel, and strongly urges the
North to immediately come out for consultations.
Mt. Geumgang tourism is a symbol of inter-Korean cooperation. North
Korea’s unilateral act of dismantling the hotel clearly goes against
the purpose of joint inter-Korean efforts based on mutual respect and consultations.
This not only violates the investment guarantee agreement between
the South and the North, but also undermines credibility between
business operators who have been engaged in resolving matters through consultations.
In this regard, it is deeply regrettable that the North did not
respond to the request for a full explanation and the legitimate
proposal to start consultations with regard to the dismantlement of
the Haegeumgang Hotel.
We urge North Korea to provide full explanation about the
dismantlement of the hotel and respond to the request for
consultations to resolve issues on Mt. Geumgang at the earliest
possible date.
The ROK Government will continue to take all necessary measures to
protect the property of our South Korean nationals in close
consultation with tour operators.
