  • The two Koreas hold the high-level meeting for the implementation of the Panmunjeom Declaration at the Peace House on the southern side of Panmunjeom.
    - Delegates: (South) Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon (chief), Second Vice Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Roh Tae-kang, Vice Minister for Land, Infrastructure, and Transport Kim Jeong-ryeol, Deputy Minister for Unification Policy Kim Nam-joong, Deputy Director-General for the Prime Minister's Office Ahn Moon-hyun, and Vice Administrator for Korea Forest Service Ryu Kwang-su (substitute).   • North Korea agrees to the South’s plan to send the advance team.

  • The Organization for Cooperation between Railways (OSJD) approves the ROK as a full member.
    - North Korea’s approval vote met the requirement of “unanimous approval by existing members” for a country to be newly admitted.
June 8.
  • The 14-member team for a joint liaison office, led by Vice Unification Minister Chun Hae-sung, visits the Gaeseong Industrial Complex to check the facilities.
June 10.
  • North Korean leader Kim Jong Un arrives in Singapore and meets with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
June 11.
  • The ROK government conducts a full-scale survey of all separated families to determine whether they are still alive and whether they want to visit their hometowns or send video messages (until August 10).
June 12.
  • The North Korea-US summit meeting is held on Sentosa Island, Singapore.
    - Joint Statement: Establishing new US DPRK relations; joining their – efforts to build a lasting and stable peace system on the Korean Peninsula; reaffirming the April 27, 2018 Panmunjeom Declaration, the DPRK commits to working toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula; recovering POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified.
    - US President Trump stated, “North Korea will begin denuclearization right now. After agreeing on the joint statement, we had an important negotiation. They will remove a specific ballistic missile test site and many other facilities. We will stop military exercises that cost us a fortune. I think that they are satisfied with our decision because the exercises are provocative. As long as Pyeongyang acts in good faith, we will not conduct military exercises.”
June 12.
  • The ROK government notifies the North that it plans to have the personnel commute to Gaeseong to check the facilities on June 14-15 before the beginning of the renovation work for the opening of the inter-Korean joint liaison office.

  • President Moon meets with US Secretary of State Pompeo and hears the outcome of the North Korea-US summit.

  • The foreign ministers from the ROK and Japan and the US Secretary of State have a meeting in Seoul.

  • The South and the North hold general-level military talks at the Thongil House on the northern side of Panmunjeom.
    - Delegates: (South) Kim Do-kyun (chief), director general of the North Korea Policy at the Ministry of National Defense (MND); Cho Yong-keun, director of the MND’s North Korea Policy Division; Ahn Sang-min, director of the Maritime Operations Division of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Hwang Jeong-ju, director of the Office of Inter-Korean Dialogue of the Ministry of Unification; Park Seung-ki, assistant secretary to the President at the National Security Office.     - Joint Press Release: Implementing the agreements at the general-level military talks on June 4, 2004 to prevent clashes on the West Sea and agreeing to complete restoration of military communications lines in the East and West Sea areas; ceasing hostile acts, turning the NLL area on the West Sea into a maritime peace zone, providing military security for inter-Korean exchange and cooperation, and exchanging opinions on the demilitarization of the Joint Security Area in Panmunjeom.
June 14.
  • President Moon, in a general meeting of the National Security Council, states that if North Korea puts denuclearization measures into action and inter-Korean dialogue continues faithfully, we need to flexibly apply the military pressure against the North and will carefully reconsider the ROK-US joint military exercises.

  • The ROK government returns four North Korean fishermen rescued on the East Sea to the North via Panmunjeom at 17:00.

  • North Korea agrees to permit access by the South Korean personnel and vehicles to the Gaeseong Industrial Complex on June 19-20 in preparation for the renovation work of the inter-Korean joint liaison office.

  • The two Koreas hold the sports talks at the Peace House on the southern side of Panmunjeom.
    - Delegates: (South) Secretary General of the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee Jeon Choong-ryul (chief), Director of the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism (MCST) Lee Hae-don, directors of the Ministry of Unification Kim Seok-kyu and Song Hye-jin, and Vice Secretary General of the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee Park Chul-keun.
    (North) Vice Minister of Physical Culture and Sports Won Kil U, Department Director of the Ministry of Physical Culture and Sports Pak Chon Jong, and Department Director of the Committee of the Peaceful Reunification of the Country (CPRC) Hong Si Gon.
    - Joint Press Release: Holding the South-North unified basketball games in Pyeongyang on July 4 and in Seoul this fall; marching together at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2018 Asian Games and forming a unified team for some sports; promoting sports cooperation between the two Koreas, including joint participation in international competitions such as the 2018 Asian Para Games, participating in international competitions hosted by South or North Korea, and conducting joint training for specific sports.

  • The ROK and the US announce that they decided to suspend the Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercise scheduled for August.

  • The ROK government has the personnel commute to the Gaeseong Industrial Complex in preparation for the renovation work for the opening of the joint liaison office (until June 22).
    - It was originally a two-day assignment but was extended to June 22 through consultation with the North for swift renovation work.

  • North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Chinese President Xi Jinping hold a summit meeting in Beijing until June 20.
    - “Exchanging opinions on issues of common concern including assessment of the outcome of the North Korea-US summit and the prospects for resolution of the denuclearization issue on the Korean Peninsula, and building common perception” (reported by KCNA on June 20).
    - “Exchanging opinions on the current situation and pressing international issues, and discussing issues to further strengthen strategic and tactical cooperation between the two countries under the new situation” (reported by KCNA on June 21).
June 21.
  • President Moon, in his speech at the State Duma of Russia, states that the two Koreas and the United States are leaving the dark days of war and hostility behind and moving toward an era of peace and cooperation, and when a peace system is established on the Korean Peninsula, inter-Korean economic cooperation will begin in earnest and will be expanded into tripartite cooperation among the two Koreas and Russia.
June 22.
  • The inter-Korean Red Cross talks are held on Mount Geumgang.
    - Delegates: (South) Korean Red Cross President Park Kyung-seo (chief), Director General for Humanitarian Cooperation of the Ministry of Unification Kim Byung-dae, Director of the Ministry of Unification Ryu Jae-pil, and Director General of the Department of Inter-Korean Cooperation of the Korean Red Cross Woo Kwang-ho. (North) Pak Yong Il, vice chairman of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Country (CPRC); and Han Sang Chul and Kim Yong Chol, officials from the DPRK Red Cross Society.
    - Joint Press Release: Holding reunions of separated family members on the occasion of the August 15 National Liberation Day on Mount Geumgang from August 20 to 26; the South will send the personnel to check the facilities in preparation for the renovation work of the reunion center beginning on June 27; continuing to discuss humanitarian issues including reunions of separated family members through Red Cross talks and working-level meetings.
June 22.
  • The ROK and the US announce that they decided to suspend the Korea Marine Exercise Program (KMEP) scheduled for July.
June 25.
  • The South and the North agreed to the schedules for sectoral meetings through the communications channel in Panmunjeom.
    - The two Koreas agreed to hold railway cooperation talks at the Peace House on June 26, road cooperation talks at the Thongil House on June 28, and forestry cooperation talks on July 4.
June 25.
  • A working-level meeting on military communications is held at the Office of South-North Transit to restore severed military communications lines along the east and west coasts.
    - Delegates: (South) Army Col. Cho Yong-geun and four working staff from appropriate agencies including a communications expert.
    (North) Army Col. Um Chang Nam and four working staff in communications.
    - Both sides agreed to implement necessary measures as soon as possible to normalize the military communications line in the West Sea area and to restore the military communications line in the East Sea area, which was completely destroyed by wildfire, as soon as possible.
June 26.
  • The South and the North hold the railway cooperation talks at the Peace House on the southern side of Panmunjeom.
    - Delegates: (South) Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport Kim Jeong-ryeol (chief), Director General of Inter-Korean Exchange and Cooperation at the Ministry of Unification (MOU) Lee Joo-tae, and Director General of Railways at the MLIT Son Myeong-soo.
    (North) Vice Minister of Railways Kim Yun Hyok (chief); Department Director of the Ministry of Railways Kim Chang Sik, and Department Director of the National Economic Cooperation Committee Kye Pong Il.
    - Joint Press Release: Forming a joint research group and conducting an on-site survey of the northern sections of the Gyeongui Line (Gaeseong-Sinuiju) and the Donghae Line (Mount Geumgang-Tumen River) beginning on July 24; carrying out a joint survey of the South-North connection sections of the Gyeongui Line and the Donghae Line; and having working-level consultations for the modernization of railways and holding a groundbreaking ceremony as soon as possible depending on the outcome.
June 27.
  • The ROK government sends the personnel to check the facilities in preparation for reunions of separated families (until June 29).
June 28.
  • The two Koreas hold the inter-Korean road cooperation talks at the Thongil House on the northern side of Panmunjeom.
    - Delegates: (South) Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport Kim Jeong-ryeol (chief), Director General of Inter-Korean Exchange and Cooperation at the MOU Lee Joo-tae; and Director General of Roads at the MLIT Baek Seung-geun. (North) Vice Minister of Land and Environmental Protection Pak Ho Young (chief), Director General of the Ministry of Land and Environmental Protection Kim Ki Chol, and Director of the National Economic Cooperation Committee Ryu Chang Man.
    - Joint Press Release: Pushing for the modernization of the Gyeongui (Gaeseong-Pyeongyang) and Donghae (Goseong-Wonsan) roads; joint design and construction; forming a joint research group and beginning an on-site survey of the Gyeongui and Donghae roads in early August; jointly developing technology.
June 28.
  • The Defense Minister of the ROK and the US Secretary of Defense have a meeting in Seoul.

  • The two Koreas, the Olympic Council of Asia, and the Asian Games Organizing Committee agree to field joint teams in canoeing, rowing, and women’s basketball for the Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.
