February 5.
  • US President Trump, in his State of the Union address, mentions the holding of the second North Korea-US summit.
    - “Chairman Kim and I will meet again on February 27 and 28 in Vietnam.” “As part of a bold new diplomacy, we continue our historic push for peace on the Korean Peninsula.”
February 6.
  • The Blue House welcomes the official announcement of the time and location for the second North Korea-US summit.
February 6-8.
  • US Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun holds talks in Pyeongyang for the second North Korea-US summit.
    - Biegun, in a meeting with the Foreign Minister of North Korea, said, “I don’t know how this dialogue proceeds in the future, but our discussions were productive ….I am confident if both sides stay committed, we can make real progress here.”
February 8-9.
  • Hyundai Asan holds the event marking the 20th anniversary of its founding on Mount Geumgang.
February 8.
  • US President Trump announces that the location for the second North Korea-US summit is Hanoi, Vietnam on his Twitter account.
    - “North Korea, under the leadership of Kim Jong Un, will become a great economic powerhouse.”
February 9.
  • US Special Representative Stephen Biegun meets with National Security Office Director Chung Eui-yong at the Blue House.
February 11.
  • President Moon Jae-in, in a meeting with senior presidential aides, states, “(Regarding the second North Korea-US summit) It will be a significant turning point that will see more detailed and tangible progress in complete denuclearization, a new relationship between North Korea and the U.S., and peace on the Korean Peninsula, on which the two sides have already agreed.”
February 12-13.
  • The promotion committee to celebrate the new year, a private organization, holds a meeting to implement the inter-Korean declarations on Mount Geumgang.
    - The committee adopted “an appeal to the 80 million Koreans.”
February 15.
  • The two Koreas and the International Olympic Committee discuss the formation of unified Korean teams for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in Lausanne, Switzerland.
February 19.
  • President Moon talks on the phone with US President Trump.
    - President Moon said, “If President Trump requests, I am prepared to play the role in inter-Korean matters ranging from the connection of railways and roads to inter-Korean cooperation projects.”
    - President Trump said, “I expect that the Hanoi summit will be a big success. I look forward to meeting President Moon to share the outcome of the summit.”
February 21.
  • North Korea notifies the South that it would be difficult to hold the joint event marking the 100th anniversary of the March First Independence Movement through a notice in the name of Chairman Ri Son Gwon of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Country.
February 23.
  • North Korean leader Kim Jong Un departs Pyeongyang for the second North Korea-US summit and an official visit to Vietnam.
February 25.
  • Regarding the second North Korea-US summit, President Moon Jae-in, in a meeting with senior presidential aides, states, “If the summit is successful, we will start the real beginning of a new era. Standing at the center of history, not the periphery, we will take the lead in preparing for a new Korean Peninsula system -- one that is moving from war and confrontation toward peace and harmony and from factionalism and ideology toward economic prosperity.”
February 25.
  • The two Koreas exchange data and materials for railway and road cooperation at the inter-Korean joint liaison office in Gaeseong.
    - The South delivered the North the report on the joint survey of the Gyeongui and Donghae railways.
    - The North provided the South with two types of railway data and materials including a comprehensive material concerning railways and six types of road data and materials.
February 26.
  • President Moon Jae-in says at a Cabinet meeting, “Now, we are able to take the lead in change in the international order surrounding the Korean Peninsula. I hope that we open a new era with a sense of pride.”
    - With regard to the excavation of independence fighter Ahn Jung-geun’s remains, the President stated that “If the two Koreas or the two Koreas and China work together to recover Ahn’s remains in earnest, it will be meaningful and have a high chance of success.”
February 26.
  • After arriving in Vietnam, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un hears a briefing on the developments of the working-level negotiations between Pyeongyang and Washington, and visits the DPRK embassy in Vietnam.
February 27-28.
  • The Second North Korea-US Summit is held in Hanoi, Vietnam.
    - Day 1: Holding the summit meeting and having a dinner.
    - Day 2: Holding the summit meeting and the expanded bilateral meeting.
    - US President Trump said, “The talks were productive It was a very friendly … walk; North Korea wanted the sanctions lifted in their entirety, and we couldn’t do that; North Korean leader Kim Jong Un agreed to dismantle the nuclear facilities in Yeongbyeon, but the US wanted more; and Kim promised not to conduct rocket launch or nuclear tests, and I trust him and I take him at his words.”
