  • The fifth Eastern Economic Forum is held in Vladivostok, Russia
    * The seminar on economic cooperation between South and North Korea and Russia scheduled for September 4 was called off.
September 5.
  • Regarding North Korea’s request for the U.N. to reduce the number of international staff posted in North Korea, a spokesperson for the United Nations says that it is in dialogue with the North and that capacity must remain at current levels to ensure continued U.N. support for North Korea.
September 5.
  • The UN Security Council Sanctions Committee on North Korea publishes the interim report of the Panel of Experts on its website.
September 9.
  • Choe Son Hui, North Korea’s first vice foreign minister, in a statement carried by the North’s state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), says, “We are willing to sit down with the U.S. side for comprehensive discussion of the issues we have so far taken up at the time and place to be agreed in late September.”

  • The Ministry of Unification and the Korea Institute for National Unification hold an event marking the 30th anniversary of the Unification Plan for the Korean National Community in Seoul.

  • The National Human Rights Commission of Korea gives a written report on its findings regarding the North Korean restaurant workers’ defection to the South.

  • The UN Human Rights Council posts North Korea’s response to the recommendations adopted at the meeting of the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review (May 9) on its website.
    - The DPRK accepted 132, noted 63, and rejected 74 of the 262 recommendations.
September 10.
  • North Korea fires two unidentified missiles from inland South Pyeongan Province toward the east.
    * The North Korean media reported that Kim Jong Un gave field guidance at the test-firing of a super-large multiple rocket launcher.

  • The National Security Council (NSC) Standing Committee holds an emergency meeting.
    - “(The members) expressed strong concern about North Korea’s continued launch of short-range projectiles since May and reviewed the overall security conditions on the Korean Peninsula.”

  • The South-North Korea Exchange and Cooperation Support Association opens a comprehensive support center.
September 14.
  • The joint inter-Korean liaison office marks the first anniversary of its opening.

  • North Korea’s US Affairs Bureau Director Kwon Jong Gun issues a statement.

  • The South gives the North notifications regarding African Swine Fever through the liaison office.

  • South and North Korea mark the first anniversary of the Pyeongyang Joint Declaration of September.

  • The UN Human Rights Council adopts a UPR report on North Korea.

  • North Korea’s chief nuclear negotiator Kim Myong Gil issues a statement.
    - “As chief delegate in the working-level negotiations with Washington, I welcome the wise political decision of President Trump to approach DPRK-U.S. relations from a more practical point of view.”
September 23.
  • The leaders of South Korea and the U.S. hold a summit meeting.
    - “Soon, I will be expecting the working-level negotiations between the United States and North Korea to prepare for the third North Korea-U.S. summit. When you have your third summit with Chairman Kim, I hope that this will go down as a truly historic moment in world history. This will be a great achievement that is nothing less than a great transformation in terms of complete denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula (Remarks by President Moon of the Republic of Korea Before the bilateral meeting).”

  • President Moon gives a keynote speech at the 74th session of the U.N. General Assembly.
    - “Based on the three principles (zero tolerance for war, a mutual security guarantee, and common prosperity), I would like to propose to the United Nations and all the member states the idea of transforming the Demilitarized Zone that cuts across the middle of the Korean Peninsula into an international peace zone.”
September 27.
  • North Korean Foreign Ministry advisor Kim Kye Gwan issues a statement.
September 30.
  • North Korea’s U.N. Ambassador Kim Song gives a speech at the general debate of the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
September 30.
  • The ROK National Assembly adopts a resolution condemning North Korea's nuclear weapons development and recent missile provocations and urging the prevention of a recurrence.
