Minister Spreads a Message of Peace on the Korean Peninsula through a Speech in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Minister Chung Dong Young Visits Mongolia and Attends the 11th Ulaanbaatar Dialogue on Northeast Asian Security (June 4)
Minister of Unification Chung Dong Young has been visiting Mongolia on an official four-day visit since June 3, and attended the 11th Ulaanbaatar Dialogue on Northeast Asian Security on June 4 to deliver a special address.
In his speech, Minister Chung presented a “Peace Identity”—embracing differences, ending hostility, and pursuing shared growth—as the path forward for Northeast Asia and the core vision of the “Policy for Peaceful Coexistence on the Korean Peninsula.” To realize this “Peace Identity,” he proposed “restoring trust between the South and the North, launching a four-party dialogue among South Korea, North Korea, the United States, and China to establish a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula, and expanding the framework of dialogue to include Japan, Russia, and Mongolia.”
*Ulaanbaatar Dialogue: A multilateral security dialogue in the Northeast Asian region hosted by the Mongolian government since 2014, serving as an international conference where officials from regional governments, academia, and international organizations participate to discuss measures for peace and security cooperation in Northeast Asia.
Furthermore, he urged the member states of the Greater Tumen Initiative (GTI) to “strengthen cooperation within the GTI framework and develop it into ‘Northern Sea Route cooperation’ and the ‘Seoul-Beijing High-Speed Railway Connection Project’ in the long term,” while “calling for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to rejoin as an official member of the GTI.”
Minister Chung met with representatives of various countries attending the Ulaanbaatar Dialogue to request the international community’s support for peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula, emphasizing the importance of dialogue for peace by stating, “Dialogue leads to peace, while confrontation leads to conflict.”
Following the speech, Minister Chung paid a courtesy call on Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh, met with Foreign Minister Battsetseg Batmunkh, met with Mongolian members of parliament belonging to the Korea-Mongolia Friendship Association, and held a meeting with former Mongolian ambassadors to North Korea, exchanging a wide range of opinions on Korean Peninsula issues.
Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh expressed his gratitude to Minister Chung Dong Young for being the first foreign ministerial-level official to attend this year’s 11th Ulaanbaatar Dialogue, thereby raising the status of the dialogue through his special address.
He also expressed that Korea-Mongolia friendly and cooperative relations are entering a golden age and expressed firm support for the South Korean government’s Policy for Peaceful Coexistence on the Korean Peninsula.
Mongolian Foreign Minister Battsetseg Batmunkh stated that there are many points of convergence between Mongolia’s policies, such as the Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone and the “Third Neighbor” policy, and our Policy for Peaceful Coexistence on the Korean Peninsula, expressing a commitment to cooperate for peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia.
On the occasion of paying a courtesy call on President Khürelsükh and meeting with Minister Battsetseg, Minister Chung noted, “Mongolia, which has developed friendly and cooperative relations with both South and North Korea, is an ideal partner for peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia,” and requested that Mongolia continue to encourage North Korea to participate in the Ulaanbaatar Dialogue, proposing to jointly explore measures for trilateral cooperation among South Korea, North Korea, and Mongolia based on brotherhood in the future.
In addition, the two sides exchanged views on pending bilateral issues, including enhancing convenience for mutual visits, rare earth elements exploration and development, expanding cooperation in the health and medical sectors, and Official Development Assistance (ODA) to promote Mongolian women’s participation in politics.
Foreign Minister Battsetseg expressed gratitude, mentioning that the Mongolian public was deeply moved after coming across videos on YouTube and other platforms showing President Lee Jae Myung strongly reprimanding inhumane treatment against foreign workers and ordering measures to prevent recurrence.
Through Minister Chung Dong Young’s visit to Mongolia, the South Korean government enhanced the international community’s awareness of the Policy for Peaceful Coexistence on the Korean Peninsula, and based on this, it will develop practical cooperative measures to promote peace on the Korean Peninsula with Mongolia and the international community.
