Inaugural Speech

Inaugural Speech

Members of the MOU family,
It is good to see you all. I am Suh Ho.

It has been three years since the Moon Jae-in administration was inaugurated. Now is the time for the government to realize the policies it has announced so far and to deliver tangible results. I could hardly overstate the importance of the responsibilities that I am assuming at this critical juncture. I am all too well aware that now is the most crucial moment in the development of inter-Korean relations and peace on the Korean Peninsula.

I would like to express my gratitude to the President and the Unification Minister for entrusting me with this important duty. My thanks also go to the staff members who have worked with me.

I would also like to extend my appreciation to my predecessor, Chun Hae Sung, for his hard work. The former Vice Minister made a great contribution to the restoration of inter-Korean relations and beginning the journey toward lasting peace. I believe that he will always be with us on the path toward peace and unification.

Members of the MOU family,
As the Minister of Unification said in his inaugural speech, I think that now is the time for us to sustain the aborning peace on the Korean Peninsula that began last year so that it may gain irreversible momentum. We experienced tough times and but still managed to gain this precious opportunity. We must, therefore, seize this hard-won opportunity. We must ensure that every one of the people senses day to day that true peace has finally arrived, and we need to lay a strong foundation for the renewed economic vitality that peace will surely bring.

We cannot deny that the present moment is a great challenge. Yet, our goal and direction are clear. We have achieved many things that no one imagined were possible in inter-Korean relations thanks to the dedication of the employees of the Ministry. We were deeply moved, and we never stop working hard. Let’s not lose sight of our first resolution, remember the touching moments, and do our best in all our duties. We should move steadfastly forward step by step under the leadership of the Minister in order to realize a Korean Peninsula of peace and prosperity, an important objective of administration of state affairs by the Moon Jae-in administration. I hereby renew my resolve and join you in the effort.

First, let’s work proactively and initiatively, living up to the reputation of the Ministry of Unification.

The Moon Jae-in administration emphasizes “active administration” in all areas of state affairs. I think that of all ministries, the Ministry of Unification most requires “active administration.” We are the ones who are taking the uncharted path to break the longstanding division and confrontation and moving toward reconciliation and peace, and ultimately toward unification. Creative ways of thinking and active effort are more important than anything else in this regard. I ask each and every one of the employees to work hard with the utmost sense of duty and confidence. I will do everything I can to support you in your efforts.

Second, let’s work with the people and all the main agents of development in inter-Korean relations.

I ask you to step up your efforts in communication with the National Assembly, and to actively cooperate with experts and appropriate departments. We should more broadly and deeply communicate and work with the local governments and civic organizations. Most of all, we have to listen to the voices of the people and incorporate them into policy, thereby making changes that the people can feel in their daily lives. It goes without saying that it is important to win the hearts of the people for establishment of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula and sustainable development of inter-Korean relations. The Ministry of Unification is small, but its duties are huge. We can carry out our duties effectively only when we work closely together with all those involved in relevant policy and the people.

Third, let’s create a workplace culture in which every one of us becomes the owner.

We often use the phrase “MOU family.” I believe that we can move forward toward the same goal as the true “MOU family” only when we become comfortable in our relationships with coworkers and feel happy in the workplace. I will duly listen to your difficulties and proposals. I will create the conditions and environment in which every employee is fairly treated and exerts his or her capabilities regardless of how each of them joined the Ministry. The doors of my room and my heart will always be wide open to the employees. You should all feel free to drop by my office.

Members of the “MOU family,” I promise you that I will always do my best. Let’s go forward together.

Thank you.
