On April 17, Unification Minister Kwon Youngse met with UN
Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA)
Rosemary DiCarlo and discussed the Korean Peninsula situation and ways
to cooperate with the UN.
Minister Kwon spoke on the current
situation in North Korea and explained the Korean government’s
unification and North Korean policies based on its principles and its
position to resolve issues through dialogue.
Minister Kwon
expressed that the Korean government attaches great importance not
only to North Korea’s denuclearization, but also to the humanitarian
situation in North Korea, including human rights issues, noting the
significance of the publication of the 2023 North Korean Human Rights
Report.
Under-Secretary-General DiCarlo inquired about the recent
North Korean situation and cooperation with the international
community, and expressed concerns over the North’s nuclear and human
rights situation.
Moreover, she explained the UN’s efforts
regarding human rights issues in North Korea, including the activities
of the special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in North
Korea.
The minister highlighted the importance of cooperation
with the UN and its organizations to bring any change in North Korea,
such as denuclearization and improvement in human rights issues, and
asked for continued interest and support.
