Unification Minister Kwon Youngse meets with top Japanese officials
to discuss ways to strengthen Korea-Japan cooperation regarding
unification and North Korean policies

Meeting with Chairman of the Policy
Research Council of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Kōichi Hagiuda
On March 24, Unification Minister Kwon Youngse, who visited
Japan at the invitation of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
held meetings with key members of the Japanese Parliament.
Minister Kwon met with Chairman of the Policy Research Council of
the LDP Kōichi Hagiuda, and then with Secretary-General of the LDP
Toshimitsu Motegi, Chairman of the Korean-Japanese Parliamentarians’
Union Fukushiro Nukaga, and the group’s Secretary-General Ryota Takeda.

Minister Kwon stressed the importance of communication through
regular consultation channels between the Ministry of Unification and
Japanese government regarding unification and North Korean policies,
and asked for the Japanese Parliament’s cooperation.
The Japanese Parliament agreed upon the need to strengthen
cooperation between South Korea and Japan on information sharing and
human rights issues, including abductees, a common pending issue, amid
ongoing provocations by North Korea.

Takeda of the Korean-Japanese Parliamentarians’ Union.
Meanwhile, during the visit, Minister Kwon reached a consensus with
key Japanese officials to work toward the common goal of establishing
healthier bilateral ties.
The key Japanese officials highly praised President Yoon Suk Yeol’s
determination and expressed their desire to work together through
various channels for future-oriented bilateral ties.
With Minister Kwon’s visit to Japan giving new impetus, the
Unification Ministry looks forward to closer ties between South Korea
and Japan on unification and North Korean policies, and will continue
to strengthen cooperation with the international community.
