Korean defectors
Vice Minister Moon Seoung-hyun delivers congratulatory remarks at a
mentor-mentee sisterhood ceremony for North Korean defectors in the
metropolitan area (May 9)
On May 9, Unification Vice Minister Moon Seoung-hyun attended a
mentor-mentee sisterhood ceremony for North Korean defectors* in the
metropolitan area, hosted by the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council
(PUAC), and delivered a congratulatory speech.
* The PUAC mentoring program: A program supporting North Korean
defectors to fulfill their “social constribution” role by pairing
advisors from the PUAC with promising North Korean defectors as
mentors and mentees respectively.
In his speech, Vice Minister Moon mentioned that preparations are
underway to make the first anniversary of the North Korean Defectors’
Day on July 14th more meaningful.
He added that through the fourth master plan for settlement support
for North Korean defectors, he will bolster settlement support
policies, including expanding the inclusive culture for North Korean
defectors, resolving blind spots in education, and providing tailored jobs.

Moreover, Vice Minister Moon emphasized that the mentor-mentee
relationship with North Korean defectors is a meaningful attempt to
embrace them as valuable neighbors in our society, describing it as
“an invaluable promise to walk towards a better unified future together.”
Additionally, he pledged to support the efforts to elevate the role
and status of North Korean defectors as companions and contributors to
our society and to make them play a leading role in realizing “a
unified Korean Peninsula that is free and at peace.”
