Effort to Resolve Humanitarian Issues in North Korea

The ROK is assisting North Korea on humanitarian grounds.
 


 

In 2003 the ROK provided the North with 300,000 tons of fertilizer and 400,000 tons of food (on a loan basis).


 

Since the 1990s North Korea has had an annual shortfall of two million tons of food.




 
 

The ROK has participated in efforts by the international community to assist North Korea by providing 100,000 tons of corn through the WFP and by participating in the relief efforts of the WHO and UNICEF. 
 

The ROK is endeavoring to resolve the issue of separated families who are divided between the North and South.
 


 

The two Koreas held the Eighth Reunion of Separated Families from September 20 to 25 at Mt. Geumgang.


 

A total of 8,051 family members have taken part in eight rounds of reunion meetings since the inter-Korean summit meeting in 2000




 

The establishment of a reunion center is being promoted in an effort to provide an institutional framework and to regularize exchange visits of separated families of North and South Korea.




 

On November 6, the two Koreas agreed to construct a reunion center (total area:  20,000 ) in the Mt. Geumgang region (Gosung county, Gangwon Province, North Korea).
 

The ROK is endeavoring to improve the human rights situation in North Korea.
 



 

The ROK has urged the North to repatriate prisoners of war and those abducted by North Korea.

The ROK has assisted North Korean defectors to settle in the ROK
