Press Release
The ROK Government files a lawsuit for
damages against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea(DPRK)
over its unlawful demolition of the South-North Joint Liaison Office
-June 14, 2023-
□ June 16 marks the third year since the North demolished the
South-North Joint Liaison Office.
□ Such violent action of North Korea not only is illegal but also
breaches agreements between the South and the North, including
"Panmunjom Declaration for Peace, Prosperity, and Unification of
the Korean Peninsula." Also it fundamentally undermines the basis
of mutual respect and trust between the two Koreas.
□ The Government has filed a complaint against North Korea in the
Seoul Central District Court today at 14:00 for state-owned property
damages incurred in the Liaison Office and the building adjacent to
it, the GIC General Support Center. This action is taken to preserve
national claims and interrupt the statute of limitations of the right
to claim compensation for damages, due to be completed on June 16, 2023.
○ The total amount of damages is 44.7 billion KRW (approximately
10.25 billion KRW for the Liaison Office and approximately 34.45
billion KRW for the GIC General Support Center).
□ The Government will proceed with the lawsuit together with
relevant ministries and agencies, respond firmly to North Korea's
infringement upon the property rights of the Government and people of
the ROK, and establish inter-Korean relations based on mutual respect
and trust through principled policy on unification and North Korea. //
